Can i emulsion lining paper
Painting lining paper Post by EssexBreeze » Thu Jul 16, pm Hi guys, I have employed a decorator who has put up lining paper on the walls and now is about to paint it. He says we do not need to use any undercoat or primer on the lining paper but 2 coats of emulsion should be enough. Is that an accepatable method or is he taking me for a ride? Also, he proposes to use a mixture of emulsion and PVA instead of any primer on a plaster wall and bathroom ceiling plaster this is directly on plaster with no lining paper.
Again, is this ok? Post by brushmate » Thu Jul 16, pm Essexbreeze Lining paper will be fine with 2 coats of emulsion paint, however the bare plaster should not have PVA applied to it or mixed with the emulsion paint. Apply first coat of paint thinned with water mist coat and then apply further coats which can also be thinned if required.
Post by paintycait » Thu Jul 16, pm The 2 coats of emulsion on lining paper PVA onto plaster is a bit of a touchy one though I would think you'll get general agreement that a mist coat of contract emulsion is the best primer for new plaster.
There are also plaster primers if that's the way you want to go. Skilled Artisans are not cheap Cheap artisans are not skilled. I say this with no actual experience of filling the joins. Sure an invisible join can be created but it will often cause the problems i mentioned. I'd say its not common place but there's a lot of people calling themselves decorators that have had no training or knowledge passed to them, so bad practice is increasing in the trade.
I can line a room and you won't see the seams, and i don't mean to be arrogant in any way its just the standard i was taught. As for your builder, i can't condemn a guy without seeing his work, his method may work well for him, my biggest worry would be the change in texture and if its visible once painted. I used an electric sander and sanding block essential tools for every keen DIYer. You apply this to the wall to stop the filler or plaster from quickly removing too much water from the pasted lining paper. Sizing a wall also allows you to slide the paper more easily into position when you start papering the wall. Lining paper is sometimes hung horizontally if it is being used as a base for wallpaper. Because I used the lining paper to get a good surface for painting, I hung the lining paper vertically.
As you would when decorating a room. If you decide to hang the lining paper horizontally, mark a level guide line with chalk and spirit level , see fig 1 below. If your lining paper has a width of 24 inches mm mark the line approximately 20 inches mm below the ceiling, this should easily take into account any discrepancies in the existing ceiling level. Measure the width of the wall and add 6 inches mm to the length for trimming in the corners.
You will need two pairs of steps and a walk board or planks supported where necessary to reach the work area. Paste the lining paper and fold it the way you would with standard wallpaper hanging wallpaper.
The only difference being you are hanging the lining paper horizontally rather than vertically. As shown in fig 1 above, hang each piece of lining paper in position butting the joints together, try to ensure there are no overlaps as these will show through your wallpaper eventually and spoil the finished look. Yes, you can. Always allow at least 24 hours for the paste to thoroughly dry before painting lining paper.
If the room is cold or damp, allow longer, perhaps a further 24 hours. Allow the same time before wallpapering over lining paper.
If the room is cold or damp, leave it for a further 24 hours or so, if you can. By the way, if you do need to hire somebody to do DIY work for you, check out this article on the essential questions to ask a contractor before hiring them.
