Why is binghamton hard to get into
Those proceedings — who gets in and why — have fallen under increased scrutiny in the wake of the national admissions scandal involving actors Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman, among others. Parents of high school seniors are openly wondering about the dynamics and fairness of a system that helps to determine their children's future.
For the incoming freshman class, BU accepted 39 percent of the applicants, compared to 42 percent for Stony Brook, 52 percent for Albany, and 56 percent for Buffalo.
While those ratios pale in comparison with Ivy League schools, which have acceptance rates of 13 percent and below — 5 percent for Harvard — they stack up favorably with the University of Texas-Austin at 39 percent. University of Michigan accepts 26 percent; the University of Virginia, 29 percent; and the University of North Carolina, 31 percent.
Even before the Ivy League admission decisions were made on the last Thursday in March, Mallory Fowler was certain she had found her ideal college. There was a longshot chance that acceptance to University of Pennsylvania could sway her decision, but as decision day drew close for the Greene High School senior, she was leaning toward BU. Then, on the evening of March 28, Fowler received a response from the respected Philadelphia school: She, along with 43, other applicants, had been jilted.
For Fowler and many other high school seniors deciding where to pursue the next chapter of their education, the right choice comes down to cost versus reputation. And far less money if she chooses to make the mile, half-hour commute from her parents' Chenango County home. BU has cultivated a reputation as a place for high achievers who are either put off by the exclusiveness of the Ivies and first-tier private colleges or are unwilling to put themselves or their parents into deep debt to pay for a top-notch college education.
College administrators practice yield management. For example, though BU admitted 15, students in the freshman class of , just 2,, or 19 percent, enrolled for the fall semester. By comparison, the University at Buffalo enrolled 4, of the 17, aadmitted, about 24 percent. The specter of years of hefty college debt payments is clearly sparking the application boom at BU and other state schools, college counselors said.
College debt, however, will depend on individual circumstances. College counselors say four-year costs weigh heavily on prospective college students and their parents.
For many, the choice of BU over, say, Rochester Institute of Technology or Boston College, is a pure value equation: Does the higher cost for a private school produce a better return on the investment? Students study hard and are competitive. Everyone wants that 4. A lot of the classes are challenging, but with tutoring and office hours you can pass. At Binghamton you get a liberal arts education. The best thing about UB is Buffalo itself which is much much larger than Binghamton. Way more stuff going on in terms of cultural amenities, entertainment and events.
Really not all that much different. Most students go to parties there. Like basically the major majors, we also have on campus fraternities and sororities. So we have some fraternities that are essay, which are student student association. Service: A common goal of all Binghamton University sororities is to better their communities through service.
