Dirt 2 is the best in terms of content and visuals and I find it the most entertaining and balanced. Dirt 3 has better graphics but the tracks seem quite bland and repetitive, the driving style in Dirt 3 is slightly more challenging than 2 and showdown is fun and looks very nice but the smallest game and far too easy.

In my opinion Dirt 2 is the best, that's not to say you won't enjoy the others, they're all pretty good games and if you're looking for something a little more 'old school' then get showdown.

Showdown I assume would be the most fun multiplayer as well - not tried the multiplayer yet. I've had no problem with any of the games and the only crash I have experienced is occasionaly when exiting dirt 2 it freezes and you have to close it manually, alt f4 normally suffices. I disliked the presentation of Dirt 3. Seemed more condescending with the British narrators and those damn triangles.

I will say that Dirt 3 racing was a lot of fun and the game never crashed once on me.
